Redding City Council holds second workshop on potential land sale

REDDING, Calif .– Tonight, Redding City Council hosted the second of four public workshops on potential land sale, including the Redding Rodeo Grounds and Civic Auditorium.

Tonight’s workshop talked about what a master plan is and how it will affect any potential sale.

A master plan is generally a visual guide to any potential development and is in no way binding.

Master plans for developments like the one proposed along the waterfront property are usually developed with the people of the community.

Tonight, Populous lead architect Michael Lockwood confirmed the intentions of potential developers to the board, saying, “We want to build the vision for communities. “

Lockwood also said Populous does not have concrete plans or budgets for the area, and will not do so until a master plan has been developed and confirmed by city council.

Despite this, Populous estimated that a potential development could take up to 10 years and cost over $ 500 million.

Populous spoke about some of his ideas, including building restaurants, living space, and development so people can walk to downtown Redding from the riverside.

“And if you linked downtown to the Civic Center, I think we’d have a place 1,000 times better than Bend,” Lockwood said. “I absolutely believe it, but it takes a lot of work to get it right.”

More and more people at today’s workshop were excited about what the project could become.

Redding residents like David MacNeil fear development could destroy the natural beauty of an area dear to his family.

“Twice a week we walked the trail to the bridge, quite peaceful,” MacNeil said. “I think it’s a gem for Redding and losing it to the commercialization, I think it’s crazy.”

The next third workshop will discuss land restrictions in the area and will be held on November 10 at 5:15 p.m. at Redding City Council.
